Site Visit: Project Dexter

25th June 2024, 16:00 - 17:30

Harwell Campus, Didcot, OX11 0DF

Hosted by Kingerlee, ADP Architecture and engineersHRW

Project Dexter is a Shell & Core, CAT A fitout for a new 45,000sqft flexible office building on a 0.94ha site to the Northern end of Harwell Campus. The building is designed under a pre-let agreement with the incoming tenant. The building will consist of a mixture of meeting space, hot desks, and traditional office facilities, as well as supporting landscape, car parking and infrastructure.

The building is a concrete frame structure with a 7.5m structural grid that has been optimised to provide future flexibility and good 'bays' for workstations in passive zones. The flat slab was sculpted to incorporate upstands and downstands which result in slabs of 10-20% less concrete and reinforcement than conventionally detailed flat slabs.

The elevations have been developed to achieve the optimum balance between daylight factor, solar gain & views out to the surrounding landscape, with dark long format bricks at the base to create the imitation of a raised plinth & contrast with the patinated copper cladding. The punched window openings follow a consistent rhythm around the whole elevation to achieve greatest flexibility for internal space planning.
